Revealed, Microsoft SkyDrive Allow Skype and Tapped

A document reveals how Microsoft is working with U.S. intelligence agencies to read messages from users, including helping the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) secret unlock code Microsoft, Australia Guardian reported on Friday (07/12/2013).

Confidential documents obtained by the Guardian of Edward Snowden, U.S. intelligence whistleblowers, said the level of cooperation between Silicon Valley and American intelligence agencies in the last three years.

The document, among others, suggests, Microsoft helped the NSA to read the conversation at the new portal Outlook.com by giving the company secret code. NSA has access to Outlook.com including Hotmail before the messages are written in the form of a code (encrypted).

Microsoft is working with the FBI this year that the NSA get easier access to the data warehouse via Prism SkyDrive which has 250 million users in the world.

Microsoft is also working with the FBI to the intelligence agencies “understand” the issues that potential Outlook.com that allows users to use the e-mail alias for them.

In July last year, nine months after Microsoft bought Skype, the NSA is proud to mention that the NSA has been able to increase the amount of video that they can access through Skype as much as three times through the Prism program. The materials obtained from Prism program routinely accessed by the FBI and CIA. One of the documents referred NSA has the name “team sport”.

Snowden documents also reveal the tension between Silicon Valley and the Obama administration. Leading technology companies lobbying the government to be allowed to express the depth of their cooperation with the NSA to address customer concerns in terms of privacy.

Corporate leaders are not trying to claim that they have collaborated and worked with intelligence agencies like NSA documents mentioned in the argument that the process is carried out according to the lawsuit.

In a statement, Microsoft said, “If we increase the capacity (upgrade)-prudok and updating our products, we are not exempt from having to comply with applicable laws, both now and into the future.”

Microsoft reiterated his argument that they provide the customer data “only in response to government requests, and we only serve the demand for specific address or identity”.

Last June, the Guardian reported that the NSA claims to have “direct access” program through the Prism system leading internet companies including Microsoft, Skype, Apple, Google, Facebook, and Yahoo.

Facebook offers the dummy’s guide to mobile advertising

Facebook offers the dummy’s guide to mobile advertising

Facebook Inc’s mobile advertising success offers a ray of hope for Internet companies trying to make money within the confines of the smartphone’s small screen.

The social network’s 75 percent surge in mobile ad revenue in a span of just three months not only doused skepticism on Wall Street and Madison Avenue about Facebook’s business prospects, some say it could serve as a how-to guide for other Web companies navigating a world where the phone and tablet have fast become the screens of choice.

Facebook’s “Newsfeed” ads, which inject marketing messages straight into a user’s content stream and are tailored for mobile devices, were the stars behind the social network’s stunning numbers on Wednesday.

“You’re going to see a lot of companies transitioning and trying to emulate this model because it’s working so well. That’s why last night was a true watershed moment,” said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie Research.

Internet company executives have long been concerned that mobile advertising is inherently less lucrative than traditional desktop PC advertising, due to the smartphone’s limited screen size and possible consumer resistance to a flood of ads on their devices.

Companies from Google Inc and Yahoo Inc to upstarts such as Snapchat are searching for the right formula to monetize mobile services. While Google has developed a mobile ad business generating an estimated $10 billion a year in revenue, it remains much smaller and less lucrative than Google’s desktop search advertising. Analysts expect Google to generate $60 billion in annual revenue this year.

That wholesale exploration of “native ads” – or marketing messages intended to blend with a users’ personal content, rather than stand out as an ad – has met with varying success.

Twitter, which pioneered the concept of the in-stream ad even before Facebook, may also be well-positioned to benefit from mobile ads. “Sponsored” messages now pop up abruptly in the middle of streams of tweets, but analysts say the frequency is much lower on Facebook newsfeeds.

More than half of the privately held company’s revenue will come from mobile ads this year, reckons Clark Fredricksen, at industry research firm eMarketer.

Some are just getting into the game. This week, LinkedIn Corp, the network for business professionals, rolled out in-stream ads on mobile and PC versions of its service. Yahoo has experimented with similar types of ads, and acquired blogging hub Tumblr for $1.1 billion in May, in part to jumpstart efforts at developing new formats.

But it’s Facebook, which a year ago had zero mobile revenue, that has most aggressively promoted its mobile advertising business to Madison Avenue – with seeming success.

“Compared to other companies, nobody has come right out and said mobile is our sole focus now,” said Angela Steele, CEO of Ansible, part of advertising holding company IPG. “Facebook put all their eggs in one basket.”

FOLLOWING SUIT

One longstanding question has been how much tolerance consumers have for ads that disrupt their stream of content. Facebook said it has steadily increased the number of ads in the news stream without noticing a drop in user satisfaction.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Wednesday that, on average, ads now account for 5 percent or one in 20 “stories” in the newsfeed. That ratio could now provide a baseline for calculating success, prompting other Web companies to raise the frequency of ads in their streams.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if other companies would look at that and follow suit,” said Ansible’s Steele.

Hussein Fazal, the CEO of AdParlor, which manages advertising campaigns on Facebook, guesses that the social network must have gradually opened the spigot, gauging user reaction and adjusting the stream all the while.

They seemed to have hit on the right formula, but it’s one that differs across platforms, he said.

“The reason Facebook can do it is, the rest of the content that’s there is so engaging that you don’t mind one out of every 20 ads,” he said. “If you have a newsfeed that’s not so engaging, and you keep seeing ads, then it doesn’t work.”

Plus, the more ads in the stream, the less users will click on them, which can dampen ad prices, he added.

Facebook’s seeming success on mobile devices contrasts with Google’s more gradual improvement in that area. The No. 1 Internet search engine has gradually managed to narrow declines in its overall ad rates from the mobile effect, but last quarter they reversed and went down again, disappointing investors.

Google has avoided news stream ads entirely in its Google+ social network. Instead, its mix of mobile search ads, video ads and innovative formats such as “click-to-call” have delivered what RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney estimates is a $10 billion annualized run rate for its mobile business, about four times as much as Facebook.

But mobile has driven down the average cost of Google ads, and some industry watchers consider the transition a long-term threat to the search giant. But other analysts say recent changes to the way it sells ads to marketers, blurring the distinction between the mobile and PC, could help bolster rates.

Facebook’s Balancing Act: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Facebook’s Balancing Act: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The good news: Facebook (NASDAQ: FB  ) turned fabulously profitable in the just-reported second quarter thanks to a redesigned ad flow on mobile Facebook apps. Revenues jumped 23% from the first quarter to the second. Last year, the same comparison yielded just an 11% seasonal gain. The year-ago quarter’s net loss turned into a tidy profit.

In response, share prices jumped more than 30% overnight and sit very close to all-time highs that were set during the stock’s IPO.

The bad news: The ad assault is interfering with the user experience. A fresh survey (free registration required) from the American Customer Satisfaction Index shows Facebook dead last among online media sites in terms of user satisfaction. “Facebook users find the numerous changes to the site’s interface taxing,” says the ACSI. Twenty-seven percent of users surveyed complained that ads are ruining their Facebook experience these days.

The ugly news: The good news may not last very long. Facebook had better dial back the ad blitz if it wants those disgruntled users to stick around.

It’s a high-wire balancing act between monetization and user satisfaction. Lean too far in one direction, and you won’t make any money from those billions of page views. Err too far in the other direction, and those profitable page views will melt away as unhappy users find greener pastures.

Don’t think it couldn’t happen. Facebook is not too big to fail. Unless the company strikes that crucial balance before it’s too late, we could very well see another mass exodus from one leading social network to another.

Facebook itself killed MySpace by launching a better service in the same genre. Before that, MySpace trampled all over social pioneer Friendster in much the same way.

And there are Facebook alternatives waiting to crush the current king at the first opportunity, believe it or not.

Chief among these is Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) and its Google+ service, which benefits from tight integration with the world’s most popular search engine as well as with leading video site YouTube.

Twitter sings a somewhat different tune but can fill many of the functions of a Facebook account. LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD  ) is basically Facebook for corporate users and could very well expand into the consumer side of things if it wanted to.

All of these alternatives offer fewer ads and a cleaner experience than Facebook. LinkedIn ties with Facebook at the least satisfied end of the ACSI survey; everyone else runs miles ahead. Yes, even the much-maligned Google+ “ghost town.” And even LinkedIn reports fewer ad-taint complaints than Facebook.

That’s why I’d take this week’s Facebook share-price pop as a temporary boost, and not as a sustainable clean bill of health. The service currently leans far too heavy on the monetization side of the fence and runs a very real risk of finding out that the next era of social networking doesn’t include much Facebooking.

So my bearish CAPScall on Facebook stays in place until Mark Zuckerberg and company adjust their strategy again. If you can’t keep your users happy, the money will very quickly cease to matter.

One his incredible tech stock is growing twice as fast as Google and Facebook, and more than three times as fast as Amazon.com and Apple. Internet Wars: Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer & Samsung beats Apple to mobile top-spot

Internet Wars: Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer & Samsung beats Apple to mobile top-spot

Website analytics company StatCounter have revealed its latest report covering global trends of internet access and software popularity. Dubbed ‘Internet Wars’ the report contains two major power shifts: in terms of mobile internet access Samsung has overtaken Apple whilst Chrome have has stolen Internet Explorer’s browser crown. See below for a full break-down of the report:

Mobile: Samsung & Chrome lead the way

In terms of mobile vendors the changes have been somewhat expected. 12 months ago Nokia was the number one vendor for connecting to mobile internet but they’ve now dropped to third place as Samsung overtakes Apple by a small margin.

In terms of mobile browser usage the global market shows Android’s default browser out in front with 29% compared to Safari’s 25%; but in the US and the UK the Apple products are clear leaders – taking 55% and 48% of the market share respectively.

This is a direct reflection of mobile OS trends where Android are ahead globally (38%, up from 26% last year) but with the US and the UK showing a pretty clear preference for the iOS. In the US Apple takes 55% and Android 39%; in the UK Apple gets 48% and Android has 30%. The UK also proves to be a bit of a hold-out for Blackberry – holding on to a respectable 15% of the market.

Browsers & Operating Systems: Internet Explorer beaten, but Windows remains dominant

The browser wars have seen Google overtake Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for the first time in June this year, with Firefox and Safari taking third and fourth place respectively. Chrome took 34% of the market, compared to IE’s 32%.

StatCounter’s report also took in the balance of power with operating systems, showing Windows 7 actually increasing its internet usage share to 51% despite the fanfare-launch of Windows 8. And 12 years after its launch, Windows XP is still hanging in there with 21% of the global market, comfortably above Apple’s consistent third-place OSX (over 7% share).

In the UK specifically Windows 7 still keeps its top-spot with a 49% market share, but – unlike in the global market – Mac’s OSX takes second place with 11%, beating out Windows XP’s 10% share.

It was also revealed that despite reports of Facebook’s declining appeal amongst teenagers the site has still managed to increase its market share – at least in terms of referall traffic, the metric that StatCounter uses.

Social media: Facebook still king, though UK has a soft spot for Twitter

Worlwide Facebook has increased its referral influence from 61% in June 2012 to 71% in June 2013. Other social networks still barely register on this scale – with StumbleUpon falling from 9% to 5%, Pinterest taking the number two slot with 8% and Twitter taking up third place with 7%.

In the US Pinterest had a far more dominant position, climbing to a healthy second place in terms of referral traffic with 22% of the market share compared to Facebook’s 52%; whilst in the UK it was Twitter that took the number two spot, with 16% of referral traffic compared to Facebook’s 62%.

However, it should be noted that referral traffic – whilst a useful metric – is by no means the be all and end all of social media influence.

A recent essay by Ethan Zuckerman for the Atlantic pointed out that whilst Facebook may dominate in terms of user figures, the influence it create tends to be fairly insular – with links spread amongst individuals that are already friends. Zuckerman counterpoints this with Reddit – which is far less popular in terms of actual user figures but might be considered more influential as it manages to  spread content amongst strangers, reaching further flung areas of the web.

Indonesia Internet Speed rating to-104 World

Indonesia Internet Speed rating to-104 World

Speed internet in Indonesia slowly but surely began to rise. Reports of Internet content delivery company, Akamai, which reveals the good news.

After briefly occupying the bottom position as the country with the average internet speed of the lowest in the Asia Pacific region, in the first quarter of 2013, Indonesia had jumped ahead of three other Asian countries.

In the report, as quoted from The Next Web, Akamai reveals that the average speed of the Internet in Indonesia has increased to 1.5 megabits per second (Mbps), up 6.9 percent from last quarter and 113 percent from last year.

In this quarter, the average speed on the Internet Indonesia ranked 104th in the world, ahead of Vietnam at position 108 with a speed of 1.5 Mbps, 109 by the Philippines at 1.4 Mbps, and India ranked at 114 with 1.3 Mbps.

Akamai also revealed the highest internet speed (peak connection speed) or when the connection is in the best performance ever achieved in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2013 amounted to 12.8 Mbps, equivalent to 100 kilobits per second (Kbps).

Akamai noted, this rate increased 152 percent on an annual basis or from the same quarter last year.

With a top speed that Indonesia was placed in position 99 world, beating some Asian countries, such as Vietnam, India, and China.

Vietnam is in the top 105 world with a top speed of 11.6 Mbps, India was ranked the world with 109 Mbps, and China is in the bottom region with 121 positions at a speed of 8.3 Mbps.

However, Indonesia is still under Singapore and Malaysia in the top 6 in position 46. (See table 2)

Highest peak speed internet in Asia, as well as in the world, held by Hong Kong with 63.6 Mbps. Japan is in second position with a speed of 50 Mbps.

Indonesia remains still far below neighboring countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore ranks 70 rank 21. (See table 1)

South Korea is still a country with the fastest internet in the period April to June 2013. Telecommunication companies in the State Ginseng is able to give speed 14.2 Mbps, and its citizens are willing to spend a lot of money for the sake of fast internet. If the connection is in the best performance, speed can reach 44.8 Mbps.

Microsoft readies IE 11 for Windows 7, too

Microsoft readies IE 11 for Windows 7, too

Browser aficionados and haters alike will be overjoyed that Microsoft is keeping its promise to keep the new Internet Explorer up-to-date on Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.

The Internet Explorer 11 Developer’s Preview for Windows 7, which debuted on Thursday, introduces the most of the new features and functionality of the Windows 8.1 default browser.

Roger Capriotti, Microsoft’s marketing director for Internet Explorer, said that, like IE 10 forWindows 7, IE 11 won’t have the modern interface, but it will have performance benefits.

“We’re faster than the folks at Chrome or the folks at Firefox,” he said. “We’ve got better CPU [processing times], better usage, and better load time overall.”

In addition to usual pitch of improved overall performance, the specifics of the Windows 7 IE 11 Developer’s Preview include updated standards support and overhauled developer tools.

Repeating a talking point that’s been at the forefront of Microsoft’s campaign to revitalize its previously-moribund browser, Capriotti said that the team building IE wants developers “to spend more time developing and less time on standards.”

Most of the backend changes to IE 11 for Windows 7 are in the Windows 8.1 version. These include several firsts that result in faster site loading, according to Microsoft.

The browser is the first to implement the W3C Resource Priorities standard, so that developers can tell the browser which parts of a page to load first; it’s the first to render text on the graphics processing unit (GPU), to more directly accelerate page loading; and it’s the first to natively decodes JPG images in real-time on the GPU; which reduces overall battery drain as well as speeds up site loading.

IE 11 also includes support for WebGL, and it supports the security- and speed-focused SPDY protocol, which originated at Google. These are notable because both previously had been sniffed at by Microsoft. The ECMAScript 6 standard scripting language is supported, too, as is more “just-in-time” compiler in the browser’s JavaScript engine, Chakra.

And to get developers to stand up and take notice, the Microsoft team has overhauled its “F12” developer tools. There’s a new memory management tool that shows in cleanly-designed, real-time charts memory spikes and other problems.

This interface responsiveness report is good news for developers using IE11, but most people will notice changes under the hood: WebGL and SPDY support, for better graphics and faster page-loading, respectively.

(Credit: Microsoft-News.com)

A new emulation tool allows the developer to mimic how their site will look on screen sizes for different devices. It also has a geolocation tool for region-specific debugging.

The new User Interface Responsiveness tool isn’t not working in the current developer’s preview, but Capriotti says it will ship in the final version. It uses more graphics than before to show developers how a site is behaving, with color-coded problems areas and detailed, real-time charts.

To sweeten the deal, the company has revamped its debugging modern.IE Web site, offered a 25 percent discount on Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac, and made virtual machines available for Internet Explorer 11.

Basically, Internet Explorer 11 is a highly competitive browser. Or at least, that’s Microsoft’s plan. But the competition updates on a six-week release cycle, and Capriotti wouldn’t say when IE 11 would be ready for the public. If it follows the release pattern of IE 10 for Windows 7, it will be around four months after IE 11 arrives with Windows 8.1.

Besides swimming upstream against years of negative marks for IE, Microsoft struggles with rapid standards implementation. Part of that is market dynamics. According to NetApplications’ market share statistics, IE still has more people using it than Chrome and Firefox combined, and making changes on a six-week release cycle as Google and Mozilla do would likely anger customers.

However, that means that those browsers, which are developed in a far more open manner than IE, are able to implement new technologies and standards much more rapidly than IE. Capriotti wouldn’t confirm any IE development on the latest in browser tech such as ASM.js, which Firefox has and Chrome is looking at adopting; or WebRTC, an HTML5-based real-time communications protocol that eliminates the need for plug-ins like Skype.

“There’s this tension of what rapid release should be,” he said. “Is it 6 weeks? Six months? We don’t think it should be six years,” he joked.

The truth is that all of Microsoft’s Windows divisions are moving towards updating more rapidly than in the past, as Steve Ballmer said at the recent Build conference, and that includes Internet Explorer.

But while Microsoft is concerned with keeping Internet Explorer up with the Joneses, the Joneses — mostly Chrome and even Firefox a bit as it moves into the mobile OS world — are looking beyond the traditional markets.

Share Location, Google Maps Help Increase Accuracy

Share Location, Google Maps Help Increase Accuracy

JAKARTA – Google recognizes that besutannya rudimentary mapping applications. Therefore, the company continues to update and even in this case involve the user. This was stated by Google Indonesia Country Head, Rudy Ramawy.

“That’s when you make the trip? Maybe it’s been accurate. That’s why we have never held a ‘grand launch’ of our products, because the company is aware of updates and updates to keep going” Rudy said while responding to thoughts about the accuracy of the crew Techno Okezone Google Maps in Jakarta , overnight.

“We are aware that our service is not completely perfect, but we continue to make updates. Indonesia with a wide geographical conditions is a challenge to deliver the best service,” he said.

Furthermore, Rudy said that if the Android-based smartphone users to enable or diligently perform ‘share location’, it was very helpful software giant to improve the accuracy of its services. “Of course in this case we appreciate aspects of secrecy,” said Rudy.

“If the big cities such as Jakarta, the accuracy of Google Maps can be relied upon. But if remote areas, we continue to provide the best possible experience. Many ways we are doing, Google Drive one of them,” said Rudy.

Meanwhile, following the Google Maps that can be accessed offline in a number of countries, Indonesia Google promised that the service would go in Indonesia, but companies are reluctant to disclose when exactly the service that can be enjoyed.

“A number of countries able to access Google Maps offline, and Indonesia are also included in the list will receive the service. Certainty but we do not know yet,” alluded Country Marketing Manager for Google Indonesia Krishna Zulkarnain.
